 *AGRIBUSINESS & AGRICULTURE*

When most people think of agriculture in Africa, images of poor and overworked farmers with crude tools on a rural farm readily come to mind. Many, especially young Africans, still think that agribusiness is a poor man’s occupation. Nowadays everybody wants a white-collar office job in the city. Agribusiness is hardly on anyone’s mind.

Did you know that Africa sits on an agribusiness goldmine but most people just dont’t see it? If you’re one of the blind, allow me to open your eyes with a few exciting facts you need to know about agribusines in Africa…

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, recently invested $1 billion in rice production? Every year, Africa spends billions of dollars on rice imports, and Dangote wants a slice of the market.

Since 2009, investors in the USA, Europe, Middle East and Asia have been buying and leasing millions of hectares of African land for agricultural purposes? Many people may not know it but there’s a trend of serious land grabbing by foreign interests for African land.

Foreign Direct Investment in African agribusiness was $10 billion in 2010 and is projected to reach $45 billion by 2020? Agriculture is taking a huge leap in Africa and investors want a piece of the action too.

Africa’s agribusiness industry will be worth $1 trillion by 2030! That’s huge! If this projection by the United Nations comes true, agribusiness will become the ‘new oil’ in Africa!

In the light of these facts, the rich and wealthy folks are investing in Africa’s agribusiness industry while the majority of Africans are largely ignorant about the amazing potentials of agriculture on the continent?

Let me share with you five reasons why agriculture is the biggest business opportunity right now in Africa. And why many of the world’s top business people are investing in African agribusiness.

*1. Africa has cheap agricultural land*

According to the World Bank, Sub-Saharan Africa is home to nearly 50 percent of the world’s fertile, usable and uncultivated agricultural land. The size: over 200 million hectares! The continent is now widely considered to be the future breadbasket of the world. It is this huge abundance of land resources that gives Africa the strategic potential to feed the world!

Most of Africa’s agricultural land lies in the savannah and tropical rain forest belt, which receives a favourable amount of rainfall and sunlight all year round. As a direct consequence, more than 80 percent of food crops consumed across the world can be produced here.

Interestingly, a large proportion of Africa’s agricultural land is located in the rural areas. That’s why they’re often cheap to buy or lease. On the average, one hectare of land (10,000sqm) can be leased for as low as $100 per year (depending on the location). This makes it one of the best land bargains you can find anywhere in the world!

*2. Africa has a ready market and high demand for agricultural produce*

Agribusiness is one of the best business opportunities in the world as food never goes out of fashion. People must eat food everyday!

Currently, Africa’s population is just over one billion people. At its current growth rate, the continent’s population is expected to reach 2.2 billion by 2050. Now and in the future, Africa will always have a lot of mouths to feed.

Africa currently spends billions of dollars every year to import grains, flour and all kinds of finished and semi-finished foods which it can produce locally. There is a huge opportunity for entrepreneurs who can provide cheaper and locally-grown alternatives to the food that Africa imports.

It’s not just the food industry that depends on agribusiness. Several other industries, especially the manufacturing and processing industries, depend on agribusiness for a wide range of raw materials. As Africa’s economies continue to grow, the demand for raw materials will surely increase and create more interesting opportunities for agribusiness on the continent.

*3. Improved varieties and farm practices are changing the game across Africa*

Agribusiness in Africa has suffered through the years because of its poor yields and crude farm practices. Most of the crops cultivated on the continent produce very little and are often very prone to pests, diseases and drought. As a result, most African farmers used to work very hard but have very little to show for all their hard work during harvest time.

However, due to advances in crop/animal science and technology, it is now possible to harvest more food per hectare than ever before in Africa’s history. There are now improved crop and animal varieties that mature earlier, require less resources, and are less susceptible to pest attacks, diseases and drought. Across Africa, these improved varieties are increasing yields by as much as 400 percent!

There are now improved and locally-adapted varieties of maize, cassava, millet, rice, sorghum, beans, sweet potato, cowpea, groundnut, soybean, pigeon pea, banana, durum wheat, and bread wheat.

There are also several local and international organisations that are focused on supporting African farmers with improved seedlings and support. One of such organisations is the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), launched by the Rockefeller Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2006.

*4. Agribusiness is very scalable.*

You can start with what you have.

Whether you own one plot of land or 10,000 hectares, agribusiness is one of few business opportunities that allow you to start on any scale, with whatever you have!

Entrepreneurs like South Africa’s Anna Phosa started her agribusiness in 2008 in her backyard with just four pigs. Today, she owns a 350-hectare pig farm and is a major supplier to Pick n’ Pay, the South Africa supermarket chain.

The opportunity to start small means that people with little capital can become part of Africa’s multi-billion dollar agribusiness industry. Because of the guaranteed demand for agricultural produce, that small vegetable or poultry farm in your backyard could just become a huge business tomorrow.

Every evidence shows that you don’t have to be a wealthy investor with millions of dollars in the bank or a highly-educated person in order to start a business in agriculture in Africa. You can start where you are and use what you have, and grow from there. You can start your agribusiness journey in your home backyard or do it on a part-time basis with your day job. It’s very flexible that way!

*5. Agribusiness is a huge job creator*

Agribusiness is one of the most effective ways to create jobs and empower millions of Africans. At present, up to 60 per cent of the labour force in Sub-Saharan Africa is employed in the agribusiness industry. Agribusiness remains a top employer of labour in many African countries.

The value chain in the agribusiness industry, from food production, processing and marketing provide huge opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship.

So, if you’re looking to start a business or invest in an industry that makes a significant social impact, provides jobs and creates sustainable wealth, agribusiness is surely the way to go!

Africa is changing. You need to be a part of this big dream that’s finally coming true!

Analysis of strategic studies in Montreal, Charles-Philippe David, his point
On the future of Africa.
" I have been teaching the strategy for over 25 years now. In my career, I've dealt with dozens of officers and
Senior African officials. I am obliged to confess that the misery of Africa, and of several prosperous nations in the world, is from its meeting with the west.
Africa was in full construction in the 15th century, with cities that had nothing to envy western cities. There were great military men and great strategists. But all this has been deliberately erased from the memory of Africans.
But today, at an extraordinary pace, Africa is rebuilding. The problem is, people don't know. An example, the African population, which had fallen below 100 million people to the 2th half of the 19th century, is becoming the world's greatest. Other peoples who have suffered less than Africans have completely disappeared.
I'll explain.
Why Africa scares the world. As I speak, the world faces three main issues: Energy,
Strategic Defence and globalization.
Africa is at the crossroads of all this!
Let's start with energy:
All the world's most scarce strategic energy resources are in Africa. Even if our western countries have been vulgairement, no one can talk about the extinction of the reserves because every day we discover new ones. You'll see that the media never talks about it. We prefer to divert attention from Africans and from the world to wars and poverty. It's a scam for the one who's awake. Have you ever heard of the extraordinary resource of the vast desert of the Sahara? Have you ever heard of the immensity of the freshwater resources of the African basement?
It is aware of the phenomenal wealth of Africa that countries like the us, France, China, the United Kingdom, etc. Are determined to maintain it in a reservoir position and global overflow.
Today, there are task forces, which are responsible for studying and proposing solutions that will enable these nations to take on the world's resources, to ensure that whatever happens, their supplies will be assured.
What Can Africa do? Africa is 54 tiny states torn between the world bank, the IMF, the Paris Club, the London Club, Arms Dealers, Mercenaries, Western Media, etc. These states have not even had time to reconstitute their history, that they fall into globalization. What can the presidents of these states do? Either they obey or they are dismissed. There is room for manoeuvre, but very weak. The West has been able to set up a vast system to govern the world. And so far no country has been able to hold, except China. Look at Latin America and tell me which country is coming? None. What do you think of Arab countries? None is truly independent, even Saudi Arabia.
Secondly, strategic defence: the state of collapse of armies is organized deliberately. We don't colonize a region with a strong army. The African armies have therefore been transformed into domestic repression as well as war or intelligent defence.
Why? Because our nations need your armies to turn against your people to guarantee us access to riches. States cannot have access to military financing. Heads of state are afraid to finance the army because it can be returned at any time and overthrow them.
Take for example the case of the anti -
Aerial. There are virtually no countries with a system of
Defense equipped with modern anti-aircraft missiles. Access has been extremely locked. That leaves the field free to western reconnaissance planes to penetrate the African territories in peace. And no country has access to satellites capable of providing information on movements of persons or aircraft
Suspects in his airspace without the help of foreign forces. All this is done on purpose to create dependency and to have docile heads of state.
Today, countries like the United States, France or the United Kingdom can destroy, in one day, all
Structures of an African army without sending a single soldier to the ground... just using satellites, cruise missiles and strategic bombers. A
My opinion will not last long. Africans are beginning to understand the stakes.
If African countries get together, and everyone agrees to give only 10 % of their military budget to a centre
Continental research and application
In Defense, the continent can take a giant step. There are
Russia, Ukraine, China, India, hundreds of
Very High-level scientists who would agree to work for 3000 us dollars a month to deliver sophisticated weapons manufactured on the continent and used for your defence. Don't think I'm kidding. You must never be naive. If the west's survival is through a re-colonization of Africa and the control over its vital natural resources, it will be without a soul. Don't think too much
International law and the principles of peace are always the weak who cling to these chimères.
I think it's time to turn your officers into scientists capable of doing research and development. Your small states do not have the resources for that. You've been at war since you met the west.
Finally, globalisation: if you understand that you are at war, you have understood everything. Don't pay attention to anything in western media. To know, aid to underdeveloped countries, helping poor countries to cope with globalization, etc. What interest do our countries have to see you developed? None.
You know, in my office, there are realities that I can't say, but I
Tell you what.
Globalization is just the form
Modern, perpetuating economic inequality. For
To be clear, I will tell you that this concept has a purpose: to keep some countries as sources of supply in goods and resources that would allow others to maintain their standard of living. The very concepts of poor and rich countries are biased. In other words, hard, painful, low-value and impractical work in the west will be done in the third world. Thus, the
Electronics that cost us $ 300 in 1980 always return to the same price in 2006.
Some small countries are kept to be a fuel tank in which all products manufactured in the world will be dumped. And it's not africa alone.
For me, independence means a certain degree of autonomy. But when I see that countries like Senegal,
Mali, Niger, Chad or the central African Republic Import Almost 45 % of their own food from abroad, you will understand that a mere military embargo on goods and services would be enough to destroy them. Not to mention military and monetary independence. But it doesn't get any sudden.
In conclusion, I am going to tell you an anecdote: I was speaking with a senegalese colonel who came to work with us a few months ago. We were watching TV
Images Of Millions of Lebanese who marched on the streets to claim the withdrawal of Syrian soldiers from their country. I asked him what he thought.
He just said, "geopolitics". which is right! Everything is geopolitical and géostratégie. In these demonstrations, Israel is eager to tangle with Hezbollah and since Tel Aviv cannot make war at the same time for Palestinians, Hezbollah and Syria, its wish is that Damascus Withdraws. Once Lebanon is discovered, Israel will have carte blanche to invade and do whatever it wants.
All conflicts in the world are the expression of games and struggle for a specific resource.
What is certain, Africa has made progress and the Africans are increasingly aware of the need for the union, the analysis and the
Anticipation.
History shows us that coexistence
Among peoples has always been and will always be a
Strength. The day you have your nuclear weapon like China and India, you can devote yourself to your development.
I'm optimistic. If tomorrow the African Union or ecowas decides to establish an African Institute for credible and reliable strategic studies, it will not necessarily take off immediately, but it will mark the end of an era.
Africa must first unite. Then you will need to develop your way of seeing the world, an African way that takes into account the interests of Africa. Then the officials who will be there will have to stop copying and pasting. They will have to create tools and strategies for Africa. Before Your Ministries of foreign affairs do analyses on the world market, they better do it first for your own "interest".

MAISHA:
Jiulize nani anaemjaalia binadamu pumzi, jua, chakula, maji na neema nyingine zisizoisha daima ashindwe kumjaalia mazuri binadamu anayoyatamani, hatukuagizwa kuishi hivi tutaangamia tukikejeli haya.
Tuwe pamoja, MUNGU IBARIKI TANZANIA, IBARIKI AFRIKA, IBARIKI NA DUNIA NZIMA. Nawapenda wote
Nilitumia mwaka mzima kujifunza kitu ambacho leo pengine ingenichukua wiki tu. Mazingira hayakuwa rafiki kabisa.

Hakuna hata kitabu kimoja?
Hivi mtu ana Terra Bytes mbili zimejaa series! Anaziangalia saa ngapi? Wadogo zetu wamekua kama 'Netflix' inayotembea.
Miaka 15 baadae, bado wadogo zetu wanatoka chuo kikuu, hawajui hata kuandika CV.

9 Things Smoking Weed Does to Your Body

by Melissa Matthews
1. It can damage blood vessels

Secondhand smoke may not seem all that bad. But it can have a major impact on your blood vessels, according to research from the American Heart Association. After rats inhaled secondhand smoke for one minute, their arteries carried blood less efficiently for at least 90 minutes. When they were exposed to secondhand tobacco smoke, however, their blood vessels recovered after 30 minutes. “While the effect is temporary for both cigarette and marijuana smoke, these temporary problems can turn into long-term problems if exposures occur often enough and may increase the chances of developing hardened and clogged arteries,” said study author Matthew Springer, Ph.D.

Thomas Barwick
2. It may increase testicular cancer risk

Smoking weed may increase your odds of getting testicular cancer, researchers at the University of Southern California found. In the study, men who had testicular germ cell tumors were more likely to report previously using marijuana than those who didn’t have the tumors. While the findings were interesting, more research needs to be done to determine if there was a causal relationship between cancer and marijuana use, a doctor for the American Cancer Society said that .

Sean Gallup
3. It impacts short-term memory

Stoners get a bad reputation for being forgetful, but it turns out the stigma might not be entirely myth. In one study, Northwestern University scientists found that former pot smokers had developed brain abnormalities in regions associated with short-term memory, and performed slightly worse on memory-related tasks. Even more unsettling: The brains of pot smokers were found to be abnormally shaped and looked similar to brains damaged by schizophrenia. (That’s not to say that smoking weed causes schizophrenia, of course, and obviously a lot of research still needs to be done on the topic.)

Anchiy
4. It hinders creativity

Artists, musicians, and other creative types sometimes credit marijuana as their source of inspiration. However, a study from the Netherlands seems to prove otherwise. Volunteers who were given marijuana with high THC content were not able to come up with as many solutions to a problem as those given a placebo.

Jonathan Selig
5. It could destroy brain cells

All those jokes about stoners killing their brain cells? They might have some merit, according to a 20-year study on smoking pot, which suggests that lighting up could decrease cognitive function, in addition to an increased risk of psychotic symptoms and disorders.

Erik Tham
6. It could help heal broken bones

It’s not all bad news for pot smokers. Weed may help bones heal stronger and faster, according to a study from Tel Aviv University. Cannabinoid cannabidiol, which is found in cannabis leaves and stems, helped mice recover from broken bones more effectively. Researchers believe the substance helps minerals get into the bone tissue, making bones stronger, sturdier, and less likely to break in the future.

Peter Muller
7. It isn't great for your job prospects

If you want to be successful, then you better lay off the weed, according to scientists at UC Davis and Duke. “People who smoked cannabis four or more days of the week over many years ended up in a lower social class than their parents, with lower-paying, less skilled, and less prestigious jobs than those who were not regular cannabis smokers,” study author Magdalena Cerdá said in a press release. Cerdá and her colleagues had more bad news to share—cannabis users also had more financial troubles, tended to be more antisocial behavior at work, and experienced more relationship problems.

Skankster
8. It can triple your risk of death from hypertension

People who smoke weed are typically given the stereotype of being relaxed and chill. But that calm facade may not reflect what’s going on when it comes to blood pressure, says one study from Georgia State University. According to the research, marijuana use was found to triple a person’s risk of death from hypertension (high blood pressure) compared to those who didn’t smoke weed.

BURGER/PHANIE
9. It could make you more vulnerable to Alzheimer’s

If you want to keep your mind sharp, you might want to lay off the pot. In one 2016 study, researchers found that marijuana users had significantly lower blood flow to the brain than healthy non-smokers. That low blood flow to different parts of the brain, the hippocampus in particular, could put pot smokers at higher risk for cognitive disorders like Alzheimer’s, according to the study.
